Amy, like almost all other genealogical software, TMG assigns ID numbers
sequentially and automatically as new people are added. It is impractical
(and impossible) to make TMG ID numbers "fit" a particular numbering
system. The free-form Reference Field is *designed* to accommodate
preferred numbering systems. That is where I also manually enter modified
Henry numbers for direct ancestors in descendancy projects. Yes, modified
Henry numbers can get quite large, but the "length" of the reference field
may be adjusted easily as the number of generations increases (File /
Customize / Reference Field).

Also, don't try to memorize *all* of the ID or Henry numbers in your
dataset ... we have too many numbers to memorize in our lives at it is.<g>
It's easy to remember numbers of people you're working on for concentrated
periods (especially if you write the numbers down on a scrap of paper<g>),
but the picklist (F2) is the best and quickest way to find someone by name.

I have been using TMG for several years now but have recently begun using
modified Henry numbers for my dataset. I am interested in hearing whether
others have renumbered their direct ancestors on TMG to reflect their Henry
numbers (or whatever reference you're using). While it is irritating to
have
to memorize two sets of numbers for your ancestors, renumbering would
mandate
assigning unused, and hence large, numbers to your children, siblings, etc.
