In June, the ROOTS Users Group of Arlington, VA held a full-day set of
classes on "How to Use The Master Genealogist". They were taught by
Bob Velke, President of Wholly Genes, and creator of The Master
Genealogist (TMG).
We have worked with a professional videotape duplication service to
duplicate the 3-tape set of tapes (corresponding to the Beginning,
Intermediate, and Advanced Users classes). Because of the number of
advanced requests, the RUG has decided to sell the 3-tape set for the
low price of US$20 to RUG members and US$25 for non-members (shipping
included only for USA addresses). We do not sell any single tapes for
individual classes. If you decide to join the RUG at this time, you
can purchase the 3-tape set for the lower price of US$20 (shipping
included in USA only).
For those who would like the tape sets shipped to Canada or Europe,
please add US$15; for those who would like them shipped to Australia
or New Zealand, please add US$20. These costs are for Parcel Post; the
RUG decided that other mailing options were too expensive.
Non-USA residents please pay with a money order drawn on a bank which
is a member in the U.S. Federal Reserve. If that's not possible,
please include an additional US$5 processing fee in your total since
our bank charges a US$5 fee to process such checks.
To order your 3-tape videotape set(s), you may print this message out,
fill in the blanks, and send your check for the appropriate amount to
the address below. Or, you may go online and fill out the same
information at:
http://www.rootsusers.org/cgi-bin/RUG-register.cgi?RUGtapes
(or go to our main web page at http://www.rootsusers.org/ and then
click on the link labelled "Order TMG Class Videotapes"). Either way
will bring up a payment form set up for printing and subsequent
mailing to the RUG along with your check.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
How the Videotapes were created:
A couple of volunteer RUG members videotaped each one of the three
two-hour classes as they happened -- there was no rehearsal nor any
special preparations made by Bob Velke for the videotaping.
The classes were held in a computer laboratory at George Mason
University and the computer screen was projected onto one of the walls
in that lab. RUG volunteers videotaped what was projected onto that
wall -- a major asset in the videotaping process.
It should be emphasized that these videotapes are definitely not of
"professional" quality; RUG volunteers recorded the classes as they
happened. However, the presentation by Bob Velke was very
professional. One might say that it was a "very professional
presentation captured by amateur videographers".
Because there is a major difference between a computer screen's higher
resolution and a normal TV screen's lower resolution, much of the
videotape is a close-up of a particular portion of the computer
screen. When full-screen shots were captured, they appear fuzzy and
unclear on a normal TV screen, but one can identify the context of TMG
from which Bob was teaching.
Because of the fluidity of the presentation of the classes, there was
not a definite marked difference between "Beginning", "Intermediate"
and "Advanced" Users classes. For example, there are many things in
the Advanced Users session that are of interest to Beginners. Also,
many people who normally would choose the Advanced Usres class tape
will also learn a lot from the Beginning Users class tape.
Although we have scheduled another set of TMG Classes at George Mason
University on August 18, which Bob has graciously agreed to teach
again, the RUG has no plans for future TMG classes at this time.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Description of the Videotapes:
Beginning Class Introduces and provides hands-on instruction with TMG,
a genealogical project manager that includes basic
data entry, navigation, and TMG concepts.
Intermediate Class Provides hands-on instruction with TMG, discusses
witnesses, timelines, accent, and other tools, plus an
introduction to Custom Report Writer.
Advanced Class Provides advanced instruction on the use of TMG that
includes sentence construction, advanced source
citations, and the Custom Report Writer for
experienced users.
