I havn't read through all of the messages on this, but as a researcher that
is plauged
by both situations of handleing adoptions, (some 20 as of now) and non
relational
parentage, (I'm Luthern(sp), almost half of my dataset has god parents).
My personal view is that only natural or biological, and assumed as such
should
be in a Primary parentage role.
All other Legal or religious parentage should be a non primary event with
the exception of allowing reports for step and adopted parentage, as long
as the report clearly states such.
Now a Very over simplification of the facts as that adds Alot of checking
into the
reports.
I do agree that in data entry if a legal or religious relationship is
defined. and we
maintain parentage in one group. then it should default to a non primary
event.
Unfortantly I believe that will greatly confuse new users of the program,
But it
will get rid of the inherent error of a primary relationship that shouldn't
exist.
The Issue I run into as a Family Historian is that certain people what the
adoption relationship to be primary, as that is all they have known all of
their
lives. (my mother for example) And keeping legal and biological seperated
yet usable can be a pain.
As a genealogist, there is no issue in my mind it is only KNOWN biological
lines that are shown. Known is capitalized as most of us rely on records
and
not biological evidence for proof:)
