Thanks for everyone's comments.
In answer to Teresa's question about how I use the numbering scheme and get
around the variable numbers-
I use the Sosa-Stradonitz numbering system combined with Henry Numbers and I
start with myself at #1. Therefore my Dad is always #2 and my eldest sister
2.1. I have put these numbers into my reference field with the field width
widened. I also (or only, if the individual is not a blood relative) put the
married or spouse name in the reference field, but indented 6 spaces so that
it shows on the picklist. That way I can identify all my Mary Ryans.
I use this ancestor system in order to catalog my source material. I've
developed a variant of the Dollarhide system using source location (my file
number), family name, this reference number and the location (state or
province) with a number.
(i.e. {17.2 RYA.009 MA3} ) I put this number in the beginning of the source
citation field which allows me to instantly (VBG) find the paper I am looking
for. The use of the sensitivity brackets keeps this number from showing up in
my reports (thanks to Diana Powell for the suggestion)
Because I am a bit obsessive-compulsive, I have all these numbers entered
into an Excel database where I can filter and search through my records at
will.
