Terry, here's my 0cents' worth:

There is no question that leading edge adopters are often at the bleeding
edge as well. Got the stomach for that? It's an easy argument to not move
quickly to a new OS, unless, of course, you have some skills (which you
obviously have in spades).

Earlier comments about the OS kernel and the file systems are well put. I
don't think the question is about looking forward to those strengths,
however. Given TMG at present, the real issue is about looking backwards.
Thus, I would suggest that staying with Win98SE might be a good 6-month
approach on your new system.
