I would definitely upgrade from Win98SE. That system is too far out of
date to be worthwhile retaining. I can understand the hesitance about
installing XP given the newness of the operating system. If you do get a
new system now, I would at least install Win2000. It is a very solid and
reliable operating system that is much better than Win98SE.

Further, I would suggest that you give serious consideration to installing
XP now if there is a chance that you might install it within the next year
anyway. Upgrading from one version of Windows to another is always best
done by installing the upgraded Windows on a clean system rather than
leaving the old version on the computer and overwriting it with the
upgrade. Besides the fact that some older (unused) unused files from the
old version are left on the system, there are often problems (usually
minor) created with that type upgrade. The direct installation of Windows
on a clean system almost always gives the user fewer problems for a long time.
