Ms Mills' book is definitely recommended. However, it will only speak to
source documentation and has nothing on Tag Types. Mostly the Tag Label
pretty much tells what the tag is for although there are a few that some
may find less self-explanatory that others. This is particularly true of
some of the Tags intended for use by members of the LDS (Mormon)
Church. If you are not a member of the LDS Church, then you may "turn off"
these Tags (e.g., inactivate them). If you wish to do this, display the
Tag Type List (click on the plus icon at the left of the screen), and
select the Active=>Deactivate All LDS Tag Types optioon from the top menu.
This just hides these Tag Types from displaying on the Tag Type List (the
Expanded Tag Type List will still display them) and any that have been used
are still displayed for the person(s) to which they are assigned.
With some exceptions (birth, death, marriage, burial, name, and some
others), the use of a tag is pretty much up to the user. Even those
mentioned are somewhat optional although their use is more or less desired
to ensure that certain more or less obvious features or functions within
TMG work properly. Still TMG allows the user a wide range of flexibility
as to what is desired. One good way to determine the use of a specific tag
is to view the intended Tag (or Witness) Sentence for the tag. The TMG
Tips web site (URL below) has a listing of all standard Tags showing the
Tag and Witness Sentences and other information. This may be quickly
perused to help a user find how a tag might be used. In addition, there
are many other pages that TMG users may find of interest including some
suggestions for new users.
Hope this helps -
