I've been an HP fan for years but their track record for up to date
drivers has been horrible lately. I had nothing but nightmares with my
HP scanner on Windows 2000 and eventually gave it to my cousin (I had to
wait several weeks for them to send me a driver CD which ended up not
working very well). They never released updated drivers for an old HP
Photo printer I had but fortunately, it broke so I had to buy a new one
anyway. I now have an Epson 1640SU scanner and it works flawlessly.

Don,

Thanks much for the encouragement. I've concluded that running XP on the
new machine is the only way to go. Mainly it's the stability issues that
drive that conclusion, and I really don't want to start with Win2k and
upgrade later. But I've run the XP compatibility checker and find a lot
of concerns - enough that I'm considering putting off the purchase.
Here's what I found - any thoughts on any of them?

HP Laserjet 4P (shared with Win98 & WinME machines) - Supposed to be OK,
but HP says "all
features" may not be supported. Assuming it works as a directly
connected printer, any problem with the
other machines sharing it??

HP Deskjet 720C (accessed over network on WinME machine) - "Might Need
Additional Files" - HP says
they will be ready by release date. Assuming so, will it work to access
the shared printer running on
WinME machine??

HP Scanjet 720C (shared over network with WinME machine) - MS sees no
problem with scanner, but
HP says drivers to be ready by release date (and are too big to download
- you really should get their
CD). However, MS doesn't know what the scanner sharing software is, and
HP doesn't mention it
separately. Not encouraging.

HP CD-Writer 9500 - MS sees no problem, but HP says only the read
function is supported out of the
box, and that write function drivers will be available by release date.

MS Exchange - MS says it won't work with XP, so I guess I'll have to
finally by a fax program for the three
faxes a year I receive.

Norton - MS says they won't work, and Symantec agrees, so I'll have to
upgrade.

PartitionMagic - MS says no problem with ver 5.0 (but shows a problem
with 6.0 on my wife's machine),
but PowerQuest says I'll have to upgrade

CookieCop - my favorite cookie and ad manager - status unknown.

Wintop - MS says the copy on my machine is no problem, but the copy of
the same version on my wife's
machine will not work with XP. Hopefully XP is better behaved and this
utility isn't needed on it.

NetBEUI - MS says not compatible. So I'll have to change printer and
file sharing to TCP/IP and lose a
layer of protection against hackers.

Of these, the ones of real concern are the sharing of printers and the
scanner - those are show stoppers
that would keep me from being able to use the new machine. Any idea if
they are working for those using
beta copies?

Terry
