In this continually blame game claiming that TMG causes problems because
it's a 16 bit program, well that's completely off track.
The real problem started back when Microsoft released Win 95. Microsoft
set an unenforced rule that, when a new program was installed on a
computer, existing DLL's should not be replaced by older versions of the
same DLL, and "system" routines should never be replaced. Since there was
no "installation cop" built in to Win 95 through Win ME, program author's did
whatever they wanted to do. These rules finally had an "installation cop" in
Win 2000 Pro.
The other problem is that when a program stops running, associated routines
are not removed from memory at that time. DLL's, etc. remain resident and
can and do cause conflicts with other programs. This is poor memory
management in the case of Microsoft's design. A fix for this is one of the
memory managers. I find that Memory+ does the best job. I've also used
MemTurbo and FreeMemPro. Having lots of memory on your computer also
helps (512 meg or more - memory is cheap).
Next think is the Registry. Again, poor design, especially when programs are
uninstalled. Program remnants remain in the Registry, and Microsoft is
particularly bad about this, thinking that their installation programs know
what's best for everyone. One partial solution is to get RegCleaner (a
freebie), and use it regularly:

The next thing is clean out temp files frequently, especially out of the
Windows Temp directory. There are a number of programs such as Window
Washer, that will do this. I personally like EasyUninstall 2000, which also
does a good job at cleaning up Internet files, cookies, etc.
As for Outlook, well I usually call if Lookout. How many worms/trojans would
circulate like they do if unpatched versions of Lookout didn't exist on all the
computers they do.
How many people using Lookout either have ZoneAlarmPro, Norton AV 2001
or 2002, or McAfee Viruscan 6 installed to prevent the spread of the newest
self installing worms? Any while on the subject of worms and trojans, how
many people with DSL or cable modem connections have a hardware or
software firewall in place?
