Since Jim did not specify what would replace GEDCOM then it would be pure
guessing on you part to say that XML would be the replacement. Actually,
if such occurred, there would really not be a replacement but a revision in
the format of GEDCOM. Having seen a presentation by the LDS Church Family
History Department concerning their announcement that there would be no
further GEDCOM development as currently known but they would be using XML
in the future. The examples they showed were very similar to the Tag
labels currently used. In addition, they indicated that the new
replacement would be based on the needs of the LDS Church (e.g., vendors
and other user requirements would not be considered. Thus there will _not_
be a full replacement of GEDCOM by the LDS Church. Any such replacement
would have to come from the genealogical community.
This may (and I expect will) come from the GENTECH Data Model that was
developed by the group which included Bob Velke. This group with
additional persons is still being developed.
