They certainly are not the same as brother and sister, even biologically
speaking. Joe passes the Y chromosome to a son in one case, and Mary's
brother passes the Y chromosome to his son in the other. Not the same.

They are first cousins. Twice.

And what is the blood relation of children in the case where the brother on
one married the sister of the other? My brother-in-law insisted they are
biological the same as brothers and sister. For example: Mary marries Joe.
Mary's brother married the sister of Joe. Each have children. I always they
were referred to as double first cousins.
