Okay, I'm back. Here's what's up. I'll try to answer the emails as they came to me - and I didn't reference them but they're in order:
1. I have Win ME, so I figured maybe this was the problem, but I don't understand why, since everything else runs fine. I have a pretty powerful, large, and detailed database that I wrote for access and I've never had a problem with it. Or any of my scanning software (and the other night I scanned 23 8x10s for my daughter's school project - I did have to reboot before messing with them, but that was all), or any of my photo editors. So it looks like a compatibility problem with TMG and something, to me. Which kind of makes it a TMG problem.
2. I don't scan into TMG. or use it in this way. I keep my pictures in a Geneology/Pictures file where they're accessible for whatever I need them for.
3. As far as incompatibility it would have to do with one of the 4 nessary programs I have to leave running through "Close Programs" then (msmgs, systray, etc.) Because I've tried this by closing everything else and it still locked up the second I clicked on the camera. And I mean locked up my whole PC, not just TMG. Shutting down TMG did not give me access to my desktop or even my mouse or keyboard.
4. FYI- I am running Windows ME which is what was on this PC when I purchased it brand new less than a year ago, after looking at several models. I wasn't going for power at the time, and who knew (I've been using 'puters since 1976) out of all of the hundreds of programs I've installed and used, I'd find one that wouldn't work. I'm usually plenty fine with what I have. I've been doing graphics for qute some time now, and only recently, and only with TMG have I had a "memory" problem, if that's what it is. And if that's the case, then they need to stat that 64+MB is the requirement, rather than the 8 now on their packaging.
5. I took Richard's advice and here is what happened:
A. Opened MSCONFIG, and removed the check from all programs except system, msmsgs, explorer, and loadqm.
B. TMG locked up before it was even open.
C. I rebooted, and followed Richard's instructions. Removed the checks from the list under Selective startup, and rebooted.
C. TMG did not lock up. Added two images, even viewed them. Closed TMG.
D. Went back into msconfig and changed to NORMAL boot (I've always used selective, because I hate things like QAgent always out there). Rebooted.
E. I opened TMG, and the exhibit log and everything worked fine, no problems. I'm right now at 62% availability on the system (I think that's what it said, I'm not sure I remember) and my Close Programs box is showing that 33 programs are running. And I can see from my tool bar that all that crap is back again. So, what gives? I just opened Sys Prop and it says I have 42% free. So perhaps NOW, I won't be able to run the exhibit log...
Anyway, I can make it work. Why, I don't know, but whatever I did in the above process did something.
Just in case it matters, one of the pictures I loaded had these Qualities: 1800x2463, Type JPG, Mem Used on disk 262695, Global RAM 4,440,832. And my virtual memory is 19836MB. I had heard once that if I could (had enough memory, and now I do) I should up this figure. Perhaps this is where the problem is. I know with Win95 I was told NOT to let windows figure my virtual memory, but I don't remember what we changed it to. And I don't want to change something when my original problem seems fixed, at least temporarily.
So that's about it. That's the skinny, so far. If anyone can make heads or tails, I'll consider any ideas you have.
