>>What Robin meant is that TMG does not recognize any file or path (read
directory/folder) name over 8 characters long. So if you have a long file
name (say "Whatzisclopper family.JPG") for an image file, TMG will not
recognize that, but would recognize the older style name (possibly
"Whatzi~1.JPG"). Similarly, this also applies to directory and folder
names. So if you have my example file stored as you indicate above, then
the full path and file name might be:
C:\MY DOCUMENTS\GENEOLOGY\Whatzisclopper family.JPG
but TMG would not recognize the long path or file names and (in TMG) the
entry would have to be something like:
[*] C:\MYDOCU~1\GENEOL~1\Whatzi~1.JPG
So each part of a path and file name has to follow the old DOS file
specifications of a maximum eight characters for the name. The file name
itself is of the 8.3 form in that the name is eight characters followed by
a period followed by the three character file type<<
Okay, I get it. However, that isn't completely accurate, because, as I've said my files are located exactly where I said they are, and I have never had a problem with TMG "not recognizing" them. And I do have other programs that slip in the ~ for the last so many characters in order to shorten the name. This must be what TMG does, but not where I can see it. I don't often have to type in a file name, but this [*] is what I would do. Most programs will let you know immediately if you type in a filename that's too long, and common sense for anyone who's worked with PC for awhile would be to subtract letters and add a ~. My understanding was that you were saying I couldn't use my usual files/folders in TMG because TMG just wouldn't be able to see them. And that isn't correct, obviously, or I have a different version than everyone else. Thanks, I get it.

C:\MYDOCU~1\GENEOL~1\Whatzi~1.JPG
So each part of a path and file name has to follow the old DOS file
specifications of a maximum eight characters for the name. The file name
itself is of the 8.3 form in that the name is eight characters followed by
a period followed by the three character file type
Hope this helps -
