Wow! Have I ever been misled.
_____
I got my Dell Inspiron 7500 laptop just about two years ago with 128 MB of RAM.
It has two slots each of which will handle a memory module of up to 256 MB.
I have one 128 MB module installed.
I've been wanting to add more memory to it but Dell technical support
assured me (about nine months ago) that the Windows SE that it shipped with
would not recognize more than 128 MB and I would have to upgrade to Windows
2000 to use more RAM in any way except as cache, a memory hard drive or
with programs such as the high end graphics programs that accessed memory
in proprietary ways.
Certainly I have known them to be wrong before, but this sounded vaguely
familiar and I bought into it.
_____
Darrell, if you go to "My Computer", right click on it, and click on
properties, you see that Windows SE is recognizing 192 MB, right?
If anybody disagrees please let me know. I'm ready to run out and get more
memory.
Also I'd like to know about any limitations people are seeing with FTST and
large databases. I.e., if I'm running a humongous database and want to
bring up a chart view of it how much memory might I be using?
If I use more memory under SE, and quite probably if it requires upgrading
to either ME or XP I'm ready to spring for it. The easy thing to do would
be to get 128 MB more as I think (but boy have I been wrong recently) that
the memory modules have to be the same size. However if more memory than
256 MB would be useful or nice to have, the time to get it before I buy
another 128 MB module.
Please all, let me have your advice and experiences. This would mostly be
seen right now as aiding the speed and size of manipulating and viewing
large TMG databases. Of course, we all know how this goes. It would be nice
to have a big chunk for the printer to be using in the background, and for
other programs to be lying around in. Maybe I'll have to bite the bullet
and get some variety of XP to handle things better.
Ok, gang. Obviously money is a consideration here, but not an overriding
one. Let me have your advice on memory and operating systems for TMG and
other associated things.
Bob Velke, Lee, anybody have comments on how TMG 5 will effect this. Anyone
remember what Bob has had to say, et cetera?
