TMG's keyboard shortcuts work reasonably well in this case.

From the Person View:
Key F4 (opens Tag Type List)
Key "oc" (without the quotes; this wills scroll list to "Occupation" tag)
Press return

You can also add a toolbar button with the "Add a tag of a specific type"
function.
