I'm new to the list (and to TMG - I've been using FTW for the past 2 years).
I struggled with the issue of how to catalog and caption photos very early
in my family research. I tried using file names to hold the caption
(incompatible with CD file systems), text files (pain to maintain), etc. I
came across a program called ThumbsPlus. It uses an MS Access database to
record information about all your photos - caption, keywords, user-defined
fields, etc. I now have a database of over 1000 photos, documents, and
newspaper clippings. File names are Pnnnnnnn for photos (nnnnnnn is a
sequential number from 1 through 9999999), Nnnnnnnn for newspaper clippings,
Dnnnnnnn for documents, Mnnnnnnn for maps, and Xnnnnnnn for miscellaneous.
Each image has associated with it the Reference Number for the individual(s)
the image applies to. Since it uses Access for its database I was able to
use Perl (programming language) and GED2HTML to automatically create albums
for each individual using their Reference Number, although ThumbsPlus has a
web page wizard that will create albums for you.
There's a shareware (evaluation) version on their site at
http://www.thumbsplus.com It's worth a try.

If you are talking about caption labels, I create white space at the
bottom of the picture and type in the photo information. Examples can
be seen at:

If you are talking about file names, there are many variations in
organizing by family, individual etc. My own method turns out to be
more correctly called a "lack of method" relying more on separate
directories per family with some haphazzard file naming. Luckily for
me, the thumbnail views in windows explorer turns out to be the best
way for me to find what I am looking for.
