You are making some wrong assumptions. I store all my photos as either tiff
(for permanent archive) or jpeg (for more routine use). The captions in
Photoshop are not stored as a layer. The caption is stored in the image
file as part of the header.

Again a wrong assumption, ThumbsPlus reads the captions from both tiff and
jpeg images. I haven't tried, but I'm pretty sure it can also read captions
from other bitmap graphics formats such as gif, bmp, Photoshop, etc.
Previous versions of Thumbsplus could read the captions only from Tiff, but
the most recent reads the jpeg captions also.

It is a big advantage over more obscure proprietary database formats.
Access databases can be imported into several other database packages and
can be read by programming languages like Visual Basic and SAS. This
enhances the future portability of the data.
