Nick,

This statement is incomplete. It must be, I think:
".., this is quite slow , but normal, for a modern program using the latest
technology and programming in an older environment as Windows 98 (= 4 year
old)."

The internal differences between Windows 98 and Windows XP are very
significant.

I'm using at this moment Windows Me, 64 MB RAM, Pentium II 300, and will
not install TMG5 before I've upgraded to the standard hardware and software
of TMG at the time of development. This is normally a Pentium
4/+900, Windows XP, 512 MB RAM, etc ..

My last upgrade some weeks ago of a non-genealogical package, but with
recent technology as TMG5, has been a disaster due to the limitations of my
hardware and software environment.

I don't expect that new software, developed in a new up-to-date system,
will run easily in my old system. One reason to start with, is that new
software will use some functions of a new operating system and/or hardware
to offer more functions in less execution time. But if that new operating
system isn't used, the new package will be often slower compared with the
old package.

From the time of Roots III I've always bought the package, then determined
the operating system and then the hardware. I follow at this moment the
same method. I'm now learning Windows XP (on the PC of my daughter). Once
that done I will now what I need as hardware, etc ... .
