When I first started researching I was working on my wife's grandmother,
all the family records including her death certificate lists her birth as
Galva, IL. I looked in the census, couldn't find anything, tried the county
courthouse, no record of her. Tried to find where her father was buried
again,
no record. As I worked through the family bits a pieces started showing up
that
ALL the family records were incorrect. When I finally was able to determine
that
she actually was born in Rock Island, IL, I found the birth certificate and
the family
recorded in the 1880 census, even though the index to the 1880 census makes
no mention of the family. A distant cousin actually went to the graveyard
where we
suspected that her GGrandfather was buried and asked the cemetery
administrator
if GGranfather was buried there, he checked the records and said no. The
cousin toured the graveyard and guess what there was GGrandfather with a
large
engraved gravestone, the engraving through the years was a little weathered,
but
he was able to make a tracing. Later the family added a small stone
re-engraved with
the wording of the original stone and the cemetery records corrected. These
records
had been in error for more than 100 years. In fact the occupants of the
cemetery
have been documented in several books and none of the books contain
GGrandfathers name.
In this case I recorded the factual source that was confirmed(I have
pictures) even
though this information contradicts all the family records. I am still
working on the
rest of the family, finding some of the records can be confirmed some
cannot.
If it wasn't for persistence the real story my have never been discovered.
