Those of us who grew up in the New England states know better. I had to
get a copy of my own birth certificate from the Town Clerk, whom I
addressed by his nickname. It was also to him I paid my first parking
ticket when he admonished me saying: "Dean, let this be a lesson to you.
Crime does not pay." And I attended Town Meeting as a school assignment.
If you want to see democracy in action, attend a New England Town
Meeting. After that, you will really appreciate the representative
republican form of local government that most of us have today in the
wild and woolly West.
