Out of all the people I have contacted regarding their web sites, only three
replied. One referred me to another researcher as his source (I know that
researcher and have seen her material); the second person replied that he
didn't know where he found the information, he just collects stuff off the
internet; the third person refused to change or admen her web site even
though I supplied documentation proving the marriage she reported was
erroneous. Guess that's one reason I'm considering classifying net
information in a different category that other types of data.
Maybe incorporating the statement "This material is not documented." into
the citation detail would be appropriate when citing findings from the web
or emails (or anywhere else for that matter). IF I'm remembering correctly,
John's Utility for 4.0d will let you append or prepend statements to the
citation detail of citations. Then everyone including me would know the type
of information I'm citing... unfortunately even I forget after a time that
the person did not cite their sources. <g>

: Rae Jean,
: I agree wholeheartedly with you about these web sites. What I do is try to
: contact the person whose web site it is first. Then if I don't get an
answer
: and IF I feel the info might have some validity I will enter the info with
a
: 0 surety. I use a misc citation I have titled Web Site and put the rest of
: the info in citation memo. I file my email message with whatever info I
: copied from the website and make comments on my printouts.
:
: I know this is not the idea situation as the resulting citation is rather
: bleak. Perhaps the addition of a comment added to the bibliography
indicating
: at this was web information that could not be verified would be better.
