I agree 100 per cent. As Mills and Lackey say, we should report exactly
where "WE" found the data so our readers can judge whether it is reliable or
not. If we have a secondary source listed, then we know that we need to
verify that source and then replace it with the better source or cite both
of them. For instance, I have quite a few deaths listed in my grandmother's
journal. I usually give her journal as the source until I can get a copy of
the obituary from the paper or a death certificate.

I once copied a list of marriages from a local courthouse. I gave the
courthouse and the marriage register as the source with the page number,
etc.

I shared this info with my friend and she used my references as her source
instead of using my name. This is dishonest because she has never set foot
in that courthouse.

This happens all too often and accounts for so much sloppy genealogy we see
today.
