I live in NJ also. There is a formal government of borough, city, town,
township and village. My son lives in Tewkesbury Township, in the
village of Bissel (an unincorporated crossroads) near the village of
Oldwick and his address is in Lebanon.

However Whitehouse Station is an unincorporated village in the Township
of Readington.

How about the Township of the Village of South Orange.

What about New York City? What is New York? Is it the borough of
Manhattan? Is it the entire city? Is it the county?

What and how much you should enter into a place depends on the location.
