The most recent of the DAR Lineage Books which can be seen on Ancestry.com
was published in 1938. The standards for proof for both service and lineage
were vastly different then than they are now and it isn't surprising that
there are many errors in the old lineage books. In fact, applications
earlier than about the mid-1950s may no longer be used by current
applicants. I am Registrar of my chapter and frequently have the task of
explaining why someone cannot use her mother or grandmother's application
but must start over from the beginning.

The DAR Magazine regularly publishes long lists of corrections to the
current Patriot Index. I've collected a folder almost three inches thick.
Sometimes the corrections are fairly minor but in other cases a line is
essentially "closed" with the notation that "future applicants must prove
correct service." Members are not dismissed when errors are found but new
members cannot repeat the same error.
