Database programs do run faster with more memory. Certain functions
such as sorting go faster with a faster processor. But I think you will
find your 400 - 500 MHz machine will be fast enough.

I have a 5 year old Gateway GP6-400. I have added 128 MB of Ram so I
now have 196 MB and Ver 4.0 runs acceptably faster for me with the
exception of resorting a 14,000 name pick list. I suspect that Ver 5
will run a bit slower.

I would add a 256 MB RAM chip. Gateway says take out the old 64 MB,
insert the new chip in slot 1 and then reinstall the 64 MB chip in slot
2. Someone said that WIN 98 will only recognize 256 MB RAM. I don't
know if this is correct but the cost of 256 over 128 is so small, go
with the 256.

As important as RAM is Video RAM but I think you two machines should
have at least 8 MB of video RAM.
