May I give the OTHER VIEW on this? Granted, you knew your grandfather's name
and how he preferred to spell it. But what if we are dealing with an
ancestor whose name we don't know. Wouldn't recording every variation of it
be just as legitimate a research task as recording every birth date we find.
Then determining which name is the most correct. Especially if the names are
as varied as Mary Etta, Marcetta, Maretta. Which is the correct name?
