Terry,
For the birth tag, I use one PRIMARY NAME. It is usually a compendium of all
the name types I find.
For example:
1850 Census: Mary L. Doe
1860 Census: Mare Louise Doe
1870 Census: Louise Dow
Will of father: My daughter Mary Lou Smith formally Doe
I will assume that her name is Mary Louise Doe and that she was known as Mary
Lou, by her father.
Like you, I am trying to create a narative for future descendants, I just
want it to be an accurate rendering of what the records show. Granted many
records were spellings by the recorder. Many of my family did not know how
to spell there name at all. But those early misspellings have carried
themselves into modern times. Just ask my Ghea cousins. <G>
