Teresa - While you don't record occupations, you may want to reconsider
this.

My grandfather worked for the railroad and wasn't covered by social
security. However, in surfing one day I found the Frisco Railroad Museum on
the web and noted that all of the old employment records had been turned
over to them; I wrote and got a copy of his employment file. I had his
information in my head but what if it was someone with whom I wasn't quite
as familiar? Having that occupation recorded (based on the census or other
such records) can provide valuable clues as to where to look for other
information.

Another example is a great-something-or-other uncle. I found him on the
Kentucky census listed as "lawyer." Then I happened to find a book written
in the 1800s on the lawyers and lawmakers of Kentucky. There was a lengthy
bio about him including his political career and where he was buried; that
in turn led me to a couple of other books which had a lot of information on
his wife and his children. One of the other books was also an encyclopedia
of people who has served in the U.S. Congress. I learned that he had been
taken prisoner by the Confederates and was involved in a prisoner exchange;
that he was a Unionist from Kentucky and was the only member of the congress
from Kentucky to vote for the abolition of slavery. All of these wonderful
discoveries just because I had noted his occupation from the census. You
never know where the smallest tidbit of info will take you.

For the marriage tag, I use the name on the marriage certificate. If I
found
another document that had a name differently, I would create a second
marriage tag, just like I would if I found a separate date.
For death, I would use the death certificate.
For burial, the tombstone.
I don't record occupations.
As usual, contradictory information would go into contradictory tags. But
others don't do this either, so we can be thankful that TMG is so user
friendly. (Not a term we often use with TMG huh?)
