Thanks everyone for all the advice. I've just spent 8 hours playing with the different journal narrative reports, changing the options, focuses, etc. I now can finally envision (in my own mind only so far) the type of journal narrative report I think I want, but it's not an ancestor report (which is what I though I wanted) but a descendant report, one that follows the different descendant lines down to my father (but not all the collateral descendants). But I can't seem to make it happen the way I want. I feel my problem is probably not assigning the proper filter and not choosing the right sort order for the multiple progenitors. I'd be grateful if you or someone else can tell me if it's possible in v.4 (or perhaps if it will be possible in 5).

I envision (am I dreaming?) an narrative that starts with the first Colgate who came to America, and then follows the Colgate surname down through the generations to my Dad's father. The report would have a full paragraph, for instance, for direct ancestor Samuel Colgate (including a list of his children with some info about each of them), but then would only follow through to the next generation with a full paragraph of the only one (of the six sons) that is in my father's direct line. There would be some info about the wives, but not too much, as they come in next as the last descendant under chapters dedicated to each of their maiden surnames.

The second chapter of the report starts with the first King that came to America, following the King descendants down to the woman who was Dad's mother (who was a King prior to marrying a Colgate).

Then the next chapter would start at the first Hall, following the Halls until it ends at with the woman who married My Dad's paternal grandfather (i.e. she married a Colgate).

Then the next would start at the first Peabody and follow through the Peabodys until it comes to the daughter who married my father's maternal grandfather (i.e. she married a King).

And so on -- basically adding a new chapter named for each family line that end up with the woman who marries into an already reported line.

I've just read and re-read the instruction manual's section on "CRW - Report Definitions - Focus Tab - Filters", as well as the next section on sorting by multiple progenitors. And I've fiddled some more trying all sorts of variations. But I'm just making a mess of it and am not getting it. Any suggestions?
