Berkeley,
Prayer card, funeral handbills, funeral notes etc. are a printed "agenda" of
the funeral service (at least mine are). The oldest one I have is 1950 but
others may know when they came into being.
In addition to the "agenda", most of mine include a LOT of genealogical
information about the person who has died...BMDB + location, survivors,
those who died before, parent's names and sometimes, information about the
parents and immigration info. I treat the death and burial information as a
surety of 3 but the rest as a 1 until it can be confirmed. Sometimes all
there is ....is the prayer and burial and death information.
I have them for about 10 or so relatives and I use the format of the
"obituary" as my source.
I would be interested in knowing if this tradition started in the Midwest or
elsewhere. I suspect that technology (i.e. mimeographs) had to be invented
before these became commonplace.
