USB flash memory 'drives' are the replacement for floppy disks that we have
been looking for all these years. Dell is now offering one of these as a
floppy drive substitute with notebook orders. They come in sizes from 16 Mb
to 1 Gb or larger and can be as small as a penknife.

I used a Sony Micro-Vault on a recent trip in place of my notebook docking
base (with floppy and DVD-ROM). While at a historical center, I used one of
their machines to scan photos and used the Micro-Vault to transfer the
images to my notebook. There are more than a dozen manufacturers of these
devices (disk-on-key, thumb-drive, etc.). The Sony version is generally
overpriced. Best Buy had a Buslink 128 Mb equivalent for ~$100 and a Buslink
32 Mb size for ~$40. After my experience transferring image files, 128 Mb
seems like a good minimum size.

No additional drivers are needed for WinME or WinXP. The installations
already have the drivers and they are installed the first time that the
device is inserted.
