Caroline,
I am using Windows XP Professional edition with 512 Mgs of RDRAM and I have
been having the same annoying speed you described below. But then again I
didn't really consider it central to v5 because my v4 was slow as molasses
in January on this machine!!!
My 2 cents!

Subject: [TMG] TMG 5.04 speed of opening/closing tags
At the TMG-UK Users Group meeting on Saturday we had some discussion of
problems of speed in TMG 5.04.
I am running Windows 98SE on a PC with a 900MHz processor and 576MB RAM.
Because I have an "always open" Broadband connection I have a firewall & NAV
running at all times but my system resources at boot up are about 88%. I
have 2,500 people in my main dataset. It is the only dataset in its Project.
Unlike some others, I have no problems of speed moving between people,
navigating the Project Explorer or even using the Expanded Picklist.
My one area of difficulty is opening and closing tags for editing. Typically
it takes 3 seconds to open an existing tag for editing and 5 to close it.
Adding a new tag using the toolbar button takes about 2 seconds to open &
close.
As an experiment, I disabled all Startup items except Explorer and did a
clean boot. I had 99% system resources. I then opened a dataset with only
one person in it & no accents or auto-relation tag to slow things down. It
still took 2 seconds to open a tag for editing & 2 to close it again.
In TMG 4 these actions are virtually instantaneous.
As I am doing a big clean-up in TMG 5.04 at the moment, this speed issue is
a real irritant.
What is more, I have been asked to demonstrate TMG to the Hampshire
Genealogical Society Computer Group & am putting together a presentation
showing all the exciting things that TMG 5.04 can do. I am really worried
that people will be put off by the slowness of the program's performance
when I do anything involving tags & that this will blind them to TMG's many
virtues.
One of the other TMG-UK users tried the same experiment on his dataset on
return home & reported very much the same speeds for opening & closing tags
that I am getting. Is this a universal experience and, if not, what else
might I do to try & improve performance?
