Hello Janet,
I have used XP Home for over a year.
Both of my Family Tree Maker CDs work.
I do not have the FTM program except the mini-version
described below.
There were/are two different viewers from Family Tree Maker.
The earlier viewer is needed for some of the first CDs
Broderbund produced.
FTM will send you that viewer on a floppy disk, free.
I think, CDs that show the word 'Family Tree Maker' on the
face of the
CD contain a viewer that is an mini-version of the FTM
software.
If you don't have the full FTM program, then you must
install
the Family Archive Viewer program (the mini-program that is
part of the CD).
And that is the confusing part.
Instructions in the FTM CD manual are terrible!
I also have, on my C: drive, a folder named FAV which
contains a file named FTM.exe.
(The capital letters, FAV, stand for Family Archive Viewer.)
At least one of the other files in the FAV folder also opens
the mini FTM program.
I have, on my C: drive, a file (not in the FAV folder) named
in lower case, fav60.exe.
This file is not in the FAV folder.
That file also opens the mini FTM program.
Confused? So am I. Nevertheless, in July of 2002, I did
install
the mini FTM program from CD #192.
I can access both of my FTM CDs.
I have no idea how I installed the program.
I have never had the full FTM program on my computer.
So, if you can stand the 8hundred # wait, and then get pushy
for a supervisor, maybe the supervisor can walk you through
the instructions for installing the Viewer from the CD.
But just in case, have all of your FTM CDs at hand to
identify
the difference between the early viewer still required for
some
early CDs and the current viewer used for all of the rest of
the CDs.
And don't take any backtalk about having to buy FTM to use
most of the FTM CDs.
Not True!
Maggie
