Hi Calvin,
It can be risky saving files in a proprietary format. Just recently,
after reformatting my hard drive, I went to re-install a program so
that I could read old files created by that program. The program was
on a diskette and damaged. The company would not replace the program
unless I paid $70 for an upgrade. Since the program was no longer
used, I surely did not want to pay for an upgrade just to open files.
Luckily, I knew someone who had the same version that I had but I
might not have been so lucky.
As a general rule, I recommend saving an archive copy in TIFF and the
copies for use in JPEG. GIF is not as universal due to the required
royalties and another computer might not have software to open your
GIF. Nor will they will not work in Exhibit Log, except via OLE.
As with any rule, there are always exceptions. JPEG works well for
color images and the resulting file will be about 1/10 that same page
in TIFF. However, JPEG compression can sometimes mess up text and make
it harder to read where TIFF will not. An easy fix is to save the file
as Black and White or Line Art, depending on what your image program
calls it. Since it will be two colors, black and white, only one bit
is needed. The resulting TIFF file will be 1/24 the size of that same
image in color.
For more information, try http://www.scantips.com/ I will also
recommend the book by that author.
