Calvin,

Good question. However, there is really no "proper" answer. My feeling is
you should first ask what you are saving the file for before deciding. For
instance, if you are saving the file in a digital form because the original
is no longer available (or it was digital originally) then you better make
darn sure the format is widely used and that it has a good chance of keeping
up with technology. I know people with files saved five years ago who cannot
retrieve the data. This is why paper (or rocks) will not be going out of
style anytime soon... we can still read 5,000 year old documents but not 10
year old computer files.

On the other hand, if you are going to use the files in a current program
then the prudent thing to do is use the native (to the program) format.

There are, of course, some other issues (e.g., lossy vs lossless) but they
are not worthy of great consideration unless (again the caveat) it is a
particularly valuable image.

By the way, if you didn't already think about it there is an equally
important question. On what media should you save the file? Yikes!

Ron

When scanning in a photo, what is the best format
to save the original? I use Picture Publisher and
the default is *.ppf. This is fine as long as I do
not change programs since I do not know is others
will read this format. Would it be better to save
orginal in a standard (jpeg, gif or tiff) format.
