Of course; that's doable. But then, to me, that's burying key
information in the sentence structure. When used in the context of a
death date, the presence or absence of the "by" modifier can be
critical. See my point? Of course in a _printed_ report, the argument
is moot whether the word is in the date field or in the sentence
structure.
