As many others have said the sentence should be: [:CR:][RF:Son] was
listed as a son on the census <of [D]> in the household of [P1] <and
[P2]> <, [L]> <[M0]>.

However I feel the <of [D]> is not appropriate. You do not say "Census
of 4 Apr 1881"; you say "Census of 1881" or "1881 Census".

If you leave this construction all you can enter in the Census Tag date
is the year and you lose the official Census date or, as I do, the
actual Enumeration date. In Ver 4.0d, TMG does not have a variable for
the year. If Ver 5.x has one then that could be used.

If you want to have the Census year in the sentence than why not have a
Census tag for each year that says: [:CR:][RF:Son] was listed as a son
in the xxxx Census <on [D]> in the household of [P1] <and [P2] <, [L]>
<[M0]>

I feel the date of enumeration is important to record. I have found a
number of times that the information given was as of the actual
enumeration date and not the official date. Using the actual rather
than the official date adds to the accuracy information and does not
detract.
