By 1800, it was dollars. But it might be a trick question. Maybe the
correct answer is COINS.

The US Federal Government did not start printing paper currency until
1862. Paper money prior to that was issued by individual banks and the
paper money was as good as the bank that issued it.

The continental congress printed paper money in shillings. The first
currency used in the colonies was based on the spanish milled dollar.
