Hi Carol,
I was quite used to London North of the river. I took the collection in St
Pauls at a Carol Service. It is a beautiful building but does not compare to
Durham Cathedral.
I was present at the centenary celebrations for Tower Bridge (albeit on the
South Bank)when Prince Charles bumped into me and no apology (but then he
is heir to the throne)!
Similarly I stood and saw the celebrations for Jan 1st 2000 under Waterloo
Bridge. They hadn't supplied enough rubbish depositories so the floor was
covered with broken glass and what toilets were brought in had been hidden
away.... so draw your own conclusion!
One evening I helped guard 10 Downing Street against student demonstrators
and trudged around with several marches over the years where the chants were
always the same regardless of the demonstration.
I made the journey to the FRC on several occasions where I spent at least an
hour travelling 13 miles in an excessively crowded train. Swopped to the
tube where the dirt is ingrained (except for the day when Victoria
underground was shut for a security scare and I bounced along on one of
those "splendid red
double-decker buses) (free to me all the time). Bounced that is, when the
traffic decided to move. I'd never get there early enough for the electric
fiche readers. I'd then repeat the experience to go home again.
Oh yes. I was one of the policement in the line behind the police horses
behind the Lifeguard horses who follow the Queen back down the Mall after
Trooping the Colour.
Horses are awfully windy creatures and whilst horse manure is fine for the
garden, avoiding it when it is less that 30 seconds old and having seen it
produced is something different. That was also the day I got kicked out of
Buckingham Palace grounds!
Where I live now I can be on Hadrians Wall in half an hour, at the coast in
25 minutes and on the moors in 15.
And Carol wonders why I love the North East!!! But then I'm biased!!

I really cannot allow Jeff to get away unscathed with his messages of the
glories of the North East of England and site with pix. of cows (do bear in
mind that he lived south of the River [Thames] when he was down London way -
north being far more sophisticated). Perhaps he never saw the soaring dome
of St. Paul's Cathedral, Tower Bridge floodlit, the castles, nay Palaces, of
Buckingham, St. James's, Westminster, Harrods and Selfridges (all quite
intact)! Lincoln's Inn, the Royal Courts of Justice, splendid red
double-decker buses (free to me after 9.00 a.m.), electrically operated
fiche readers in the FRC if one gets there early enough. I could go on and
on about the wonders of London - and I haven't even started on beautiful
Buckinghamshire - beechwoods carpeted with bluebells in spring.
As for us 1944 girls - well our hair may be a different colour (choice
unlimited these days), the spinnaker a little lower, the girth somewhat
larger, the legs less elegant thanks to untold family labours - but the zip
is still there. There are even younger, lovelier versions of us around but,
of course, not as interesting as those of us with tales to tell.
