Over the years I have tried all sorts of methods of backing up. Floppy disks
were fine when you only needed one or two, but when it got to be twenty I
bought a tape drive. On my present computer that takes eight hours to back
up most of the hard drive.
CR-R and CD-RW are much faster but not very convenient. You can't schedule
it for offtime because it may take more than one disk. For my stuff it takes
three CDs, and I have to be around to change them.
I finally bought a 60GB external hard drive. It installed in a snap. Backing
up is like copying a file to another directory. It is so easy that I
regularly back up all my wife's files at the same time (we run a little home
network). It is big enough to contain ten backups, if that were needed. It
takes about twenty minutes to back up my important files. It cost $CAN270
(about $US180).
I realize there are some disadvantages, such as not being able to store a
second backup off-site. Once a month I make a backup on CD-RW and store it
in a safe place.
