I do shut down and reboot my computer regularly. I've always done
that, but TMP files creep in anyway, but I've NEVER seen 6 gigabytes of TMP
files appear. I think that's way out of line.

You can delete the TMP files. One precaution I take whenever I
look for and delete the TMP files that get left around, is that I do not
delete any files that have the current date's timestamp on them. I expect
that's being more careful than necessary, but that's just the way I've done
it for a long time. And I've never had a problem.
