Subject: [TMG] OT: GenSeekers.com Asking For Bank Account Information to Sign Up for Free Trial -- Beware
Date: Thu, 1 May 2003 06:03:23 -0400

I received an e-mail this morning (SPAM, but I read it anyway) from an
organization calling itself "Genseekers.com" and claiming to have a huge
database of genealogical information. The e-mail was offering a 5 day
free trial of their database, so I went to the web site to check it out.
In order to participate in their free trial they were asking for bank
account information -- not a credit card. Credit cards have fraud
protection, but I don't think I would have given these folks even that
since I've never heard of them. I sent them an e-mail via their contact
link on the site and told them I hoped no one else was gullible enough
to surrender their bank account information to an unknown entity.

I don't usually post off-topic (or this way off-topic) posts, but I
thought it was important to remind everyone that if you DO pay for
something over the Internet, you should always use a credit card (or
PayPal -- they don't even offer that option, which raises a huge red
flag for me).
