Hi Kevin,
I had my image files in a complex Directory tree that pretty much
mimicked my family tree. I am now in the process of consolidating the
content of those folders. Since learning about IMatch,
http://www.photools.com I no longer need a large number of folders on
my hard drive. Using the Categories feature in IMatch, I have build a
virtual Directory tree like that I had on my hard drive. Unlike the
hard drive directory, I can have just one copy on the hard drive but
can assign that image to as many category folders as needed. This is
great when two or more persons are in the same picture or when an
image is needed in a certain folder by other applications.
I have not done so but if I want to create a folder for gender or
location or you name it, I can assign images to those categories. By
entering the name of each person in the file's properites, I can call
up every image file that is associated with a person whether they
appear alone or with 18 other persons. I am not ready to do so but I
do intend to create Slide show categories. IMatch does have a slide
show feature but it does not have the power of Slideshow Manager (SSM)
in TMG. It does beat SSM in one area, IMatch can help me plan my
slideshows better by allowing me to get the images I want into a
Category for each Slide show.
Once I have built a slide show in IMatch, I can test view it there. If
it is what I want, I can drag and drop the images into a slide show in
SSM. Once the files are in SSM, I can use the features there to time
each slide, add voice and so on. Like IMatch, SSM uses one image file
no matter how many times that image is used in a slide show or how
many slide shows it is in. SSM uses one folder for all images used in
slide shows. Since IMatch does not care where an image file is stored,
C:\Program Files\The Master Genealogist\SlideShow will become the
folder where many of my image files are located. i.e., I can use the
power of IMatch to make up for weaknesses in TMG image handling and
TMG to do what IMatch can't do.
If I remember a picture but not where I put it or what it is named, I
can pick an image similar to what I recall and IMatch will find files
that are like the example. For example, a cousin did not want to
disturb some framed portraits so she sent me pictures of those
portraits, frame and all. I asked IMatch to find images similar to one
of those pictures of a picture. IMatch found just those of a single
person that had a frame. My example had one person with a frame and
that is what it returned. I asked it to find pictures similar to one
with a large group and it found five in under three seconds. I can't
sketch but if I could, I could make a sketch that looks like the
image(s) I want and IMatch will find them. At least so they say. I
have tried that. <g>
I can't begin to list all of the ways that IMatch can help with large
image collections. I don't even know most of them yet. Those I have
learned have been a big help to me. The only money I have invested in
Photools is what I paid for IMatch. The only gain that I will receive
for promoting IMatch is the gratitude of those who try it and like it
as much as I do. Since I started scanning in 1997 I have looked at
program after program. I know I have more than seven programs on CD
that I purchased. I have downloaded many trial versions. None of them
had the power of IMatch. Prior to IMatch I had used PhotoAlbum, which
is free and a better value than anything else that I tested until
IMatch. If a user gives TMG or IMatch a thorough test, they will
probably be sold. It was someone on this list that got the IMatch bug
first and then recommended IMatch to me. I am very glad that he did.
