Jacqueline,
As per the TMG Help file (accessible from the Help menu), under both
"PDF Printer Install" and "Install PDF Printer":
Install PDF Printer
This option is provided for those who
· need to use PDF files and
· are using Windows 2000, Windows NT, or Windows XP, but
· do not have System Administrator privileges and
· whose attempt to print a PDF file has failed.
If you are not using PDF files, or if you are not using one of these
operating systems, you do not need this option.
NOTE: This process must be performed by someone who has logged into
Windows with Administrator rights. If you do not have such rights, you
will need to have your System Administrator perform this task for you.
TMG generates a PDF file by installing a printer called "Wholly Genes
PDF Writer" in your printer list. The output of the printer is directed
to a PDF file, but it is otherwise identical to any other printer
driver. Some users are annoyed to find printers that they don't
recognize in their printer list (Start > Settings > Printers), so TMG
creates the "Wholly Genes PDF Writer" when it needs it, generates the
report, and then immediately deletes the printer from the list. If you
don't have Administrator rights, then TMG can't install the driver when
it needs it. The only solution is to install the printer driver
permanently, i.e., so it appears permanently in your printer list. But
you can't do that either if you don't have Administrator rights.
Therefore, you need to get someone who does have Administrator rights to
log on, open TMG, follow the directions below, then shut down TMG and
log off. When the user next logs on and runs TMG, he can generate a PDF
file because the driver already is installed.
This mostly applies to people using TMG at work or on a public computer,
for example., at a library. When administrators of such systems don't
give Administrator right to users, it is because they don't want users
to install printers.
To permanently install a driver for use with PDF files:
1. Select File > Printer Setup.
2. Click [Install PDF Printer].
3. Answer Yes.
4. Click [OK].
