I record the name just as it shows or is implied, so I would use
Margaret Milbee in this case. UNLESS, you just wanted the first name to
print in your reports, and then it is best to use Margaret --. Have I
confused you more?
I have a census name tag for each census year like:
1840CEN-Name
1850CEN-Name
1880CEN-Name
That way if I realize later that I read the name on the 1850 census
wrong, I can just change the name tag and it will automatically change
everywhere that I used that name tag. Some people don't record these
(like Terry) but I have found that if you are still in the RESEARCH
stage, it can help you to find these people in other county records.
For instance:
I spent years looking for Joseph Hubbard. I had found him in every
year, but the one year that would prove he was a father to my great
grandmother's brother. She never lived with her father during a census
year having been born in 1881 and married in 1899, but I had
documentation linking her and her brother as siblings, so if I could
prove that Joseph was the father of the brother, I could infer (I know
there could be other relationships) that he was her father too.
Finally found him as Joseph Hibbert. And the son was living with him.
So now when looking for deeds and other records for him, I also look
under Hibbert. (Oh, and after 5 long years of looking for him, where
was he? Living next door to his father-in-law who I had found 5 years
earlier.<G>)
With that 1910CEN-Name tag staring me in the face on his PV, I don't
forget to search for Hibberts.

****Would you use just the first name or the first name combined with
what is implied to be the last name - based on how a census is actually
taken with the line drawn as long as everyone has the same last name.
Milbee, Neil
--------- Margaret
Your Name-census would now be Margaret Milbee - not just Margaret. Is
that correct?
