... and when the strange man came to my grandmother's door in 1920 and asked her (8 months pregnant with her last child) to name all her children in order of birth, she did. Including Carmen Ersel, who was sixteen years dead, having died when only 5 months old. Carmen was never forgotten, and her mother never bothered to tell the enumerator the baby was in the cemetery ... or he never asked! And from the ages of the other children, it is obvious he knew the order of birth only, and guessed the ages. So much for "as of" dates.
