There would be a place to assign a style to a tag type. Instead of
assigning the DEFAULT to the whole data set, we would assign the DEFAULT
to each tag type, much the way we do sentences and roles now. That tag
type would use that style until the user either 1) changed it at the tag
level (for that one tag just like sentences) or 2) changed it at the
DEFAULT level (which would change it for all tags just like sentence
structures do now.)
As far as programming, it probably would complicate things, but I really
don't see how it would slow things down, and the user could always
choose to use the standard default. This would truly be one of those
really advanced uses of the program. Someday, I hope that TMG 5.0 will
move beyond just being a 32 bit version of 4.0 and move into some new
features that will make it really stand out amongst the crowd. Name and
Place styles are one area where I can really see it doing that if users
took the time to use them. Yet at the same time, the standard set up is
still easy enough for the basic users to use. And being able to assign
several defaults based on tag type would really speed up data entry,
thus eliminating some of the complication. I realize that this is fully
something Bob isn't going to look at until 5.0 is finished. But someday
I hope it is implemented. Until then, I will continue to run John's
utility before I print any reports so that they are all consistent.

As it is now, you can choose the default Name Style and/or Place Style
to
be used throughout the data set. This default Style would then be used
as
appropriate depending on the Tag chosen for data entry. As there may be
many different Name and/or Place Styles, a user can as a Tag is being
entered choose a different Style if desired.
How do you envision that TMG could know which of many Styles (other than
the default for the data set) should be used for any particular Tag. If
you have one Style (of the appropriate type) for use under one Tag(s)
and
another for another Tag(s) and still another for another Tag(s), how
would
TMG know which Style (other than the default) would be "automatically"
applied to any one Tag as opposed to another Tag?
I can see that this might be nice to have. But it would seem to me that
it
would complicate a program which is already accused of being
complicated.
