I was just going through the 1930 census trying to find my parents and brothers. The census shows the town of Newton in the township of Newton, Jasper Co., IA. This is the first incidence of this that I have encountered while going through the census records from 1880 on in IA. Most of them have just been townships with unincorporated towns or rural areas of farming.
I have always just put the township in the Details in case I found any further information later on. Sometimes it will also give the information as being near a particular town so I go ahead and put the town with (near) following. This has helped locate the area in a little more precise area.

Give us some examples of these from official records. I agree that you
will find villages and hamlets in a township, but I don't think you will
find incorporated towns and cities being considered in a township.
And the example you gave in another message: Lanark Village, Lanark
Township, Lanark County, Ontario. I would not use Village in the place
name unless it was used as part of the name as in : French Village, ,
Halifax County, NS.
And if you want to record townships to clarify two village with the same
or similar names, you can put an exclusion marker: - in front of the
township name so it will not print.
