Stuart, you have to Reindex after changing Reference fields to get the
Picklist in Reference order. After that it works fine (until you change
some more Reference fields).

The sort by reference number still does not work in the picklist.

If you change some reference fields the sort order isn't updated, and the
scrolling is also corrupted when these changed reference fields are
encountered, especially when scrolling backwards.
