Patty- I think, but not very strongly, that I have to disagree. I don't think
the use of a past tense necessarily includes the notion that something "no
longer is". If I say "my sister was a pretty lady", am I trying to imply she no
longer is. I think I am implying that MY action was in the past, that I am
speaking of a past observation, not of the present condition. Isn't that analgous
to the TMG statement. If I say that someone's children "are" I am implying
that they still exist. If one thinks that the verb applies to the "known list of
children" still existing today, then I believe "are" would in fact be
appropriate. However, I don't think I am saying that. I think I am saying something
like this: At the time I wrote this statement, the known children of Richard
"were" . You folks ought to be grateful that Wholly Genes didn't hire me as a
programmer. Imagine what the delay to V5 might have been if it had been me
trying to figure out the use of "were' and "are" in a sentence.-Dale
